Trains belong to companies. Every player who wants a train opens one at a railroad office, even alone, and buys the engine and its cars with the company’s money.

Opening a company

  1. Walk up to the counter of a railroad office and press G (“Railroad office”).
  2. Without a company, the office offers New company: a name (3 to 32 letters), a description (up to 200) and the opening fee, $20 from your pocket.
  3. You are the owner. One company per character.

Roles

The roles only control the company. Train work is for everyone in it: anyone in the company drives its trains, shovels coal, repairs, takes freight contracts and checks tickets.

The office

The office screen has five parts on the left:
  • Till: the company’s money. Anyone deposits; the owner withdraws. Below it, the crew commission and the statement: the last 30 movements, with the reason, the date and who did it.
  • Staff: the members, who is online and their role. The owner and managers see the players standing within 10 m who have no company, and Hire sends them a job offer; it waits 60 seconds for an answer.
  • Fleet: the company’s train, where it is (parked at a yard, on the line, in the workshop) and the wear of its wheels, brakes and boiler. The owner’s Customize button is here.
  • Catalogue: what the company can buy.
  • Company: the name and description. The owner closes the company here; the others leave it.
The company’s money comes from tickets sold for its trains, the fares of NPC passengers, freight deliveries and track repairs. It goes out on purchases, repairs, customisation, commissions and withdrawals.

The catalogue

The engine comes first: a company owns one, with its tender, and it pulls everything. The cars unlock once the company owns it, and are bought one at a time. Buying the engine asks for the train’s name first (1 to 24 characters). Choose it well: it can’t be changed later. A company owns up to 12 cars. Each time the train is called, the yard screen puts it together from the cars the company owns: up to 3 behind the tender and a caboose at the end. See Driving a train.

Crew commission

A share of each freight contract’s pay goes from the till to the members who carried its pieces, split by how many pieces each one carried, straight into their pocket. It is 10% by default; the owner sets it from 0 to 100% under the till. A member who is offline when the contract is paid keeps nothing: his share stays in the till.

Closing or leaving

  • Close company (owner): every train must be parked first. Nothing is sold back: the till goes to the owner’s pocket and the company, its train, its cars and its members are gone.
  • Leave company (everyone else): you lose your rank. The owner cannot leave: he closes the company instead.

Customising the engine

The owner opens the customisation from the office: Fleet, then Customize on the engine. The screen fades into the Locomotive Workshop, a lit hall where the engine stands, always at night. Only you are there: nobody else sees you while it is open. Choosing a part turns the camera to it; drag with the mouse to look around. The engine has eight parts: The 16 colours: Black, Charcoal, Slate Grey, Sand, Cream, Crimson, Maroon, Tuscan Red, Chocolate, Copper, Mustard, Olive, Bottle Green, Forest Green, Navy and Royal Blue. Every change you pick goes into the cart, with its price. Pay and apply pays the cart from the company’s till and paints the engine. Leaving with an unpaid cart asks first, and leaving abandons it. Taking a piece off is free. The look is saved with the engine: a train on the line changes at once, the next calls bring it back, and every player sees it. The prices are in Config.CustomPrices (see Configuration).
