# Passengers

> Tickets, seats, the conductor, NPC passengers and the server's own trains.

## Buying a ticket

The ticket counter (**L**, "Ticket counter") is at the railroad office where the station has one. Elsewhere it is at the station's counter point, or on its platform.

The counter lists every company with a train standing at this station or coming to it, with the stations that train goes to next, the price of each and the next train ("Next train: ... in \~5 min"). The server's own trains sell there too, as **Railroad**.

* The price is $0.10 plus $0.40 per km along the track. There are no tickets for a trip shorter than 300 m.
* The ticket goes into your satchel and is good for 24 hours. Using it from the inventory shows the ticket: from, to, the company, valid until and its number.
* A company's ticket is only for that company's trains.

## Riding

1. Board the coach and press **G** ("Sit") beside a free seat.
2. Your ticket is used when you sit. It must be for this train's company, from the station the train stands at (or last stopped at), to a station on its way. If not, the screen says why: expired, another company's, another station's, or a train that doesn't go to your station.
3. Seated, a small map shows the way, the next stop and when you are close to yours ("Rhodes: your stop"). **V** turns between the camera behind the engine and the view inside the coach. The key on the panel stands you up; sitting down again on the same train needs no new ticket.

Players at a station, and players with a ticket from it, get a notice when a train is less than 10 minutes away ("Arriving at Valentine in \~4 min").

If the train leaves the world with you aboard (parked, abandoned or wrecked), you get your ticket back.

## The crew

* The members of the train's company ride free.
* **The conductor**: anyone of the company in the train's crew checks a player within 3 m with **G** ("Check ticket") and sees his ticket, or that he has none.
* A player riding inside a car without a ticket when the train leaves a station is written on the company's statement, as "No ticket". There is no fine.

## NPC passengers

On a company train with passenger cars, the NPCs come by themselves:

* As the train comes in to a station, 2 to 6 NPCs wait for it on the platform.
* At the stop, up to 4 get off and up to 4 board, once the train stands still. Those who get off walk to the station's counter and leave.
* Each one pays when it gets off at another station: the ticket price of the stretch it rode, into the company's till.
* The cab shows how many are aboard and the fares coming in. When everyone is aboard: "All passengers are aboard: you can go."
* NPCs waiting with no stop for 3 minutes give up.

## The server's trains

When no player train needs the line, the server runs its own trains on a timetable. Four routes come ready: **Heartland Local** (Valentine, Emerald, Rhodes), **Lannahechee Line** (Saint Denis, Annesburg), **Bayou Express** (Rhodes, Saint Denis) and **Cumberland Line** (Riggs, Wallace, Valentine).

* A server train is in the world only near players. Far from everyone, its place comes from its timetable.
* It gives the line up to a player train that needs it.
* Its tickets are sold at the counter as **Railroad**, and you ride it like any other train.

The routes, their cars and where their fares go are set in `Config.NpcRoutes` and `Config.NpcTrain` (see [Configuration](https://rust-co.mintlify.site/rco-steamline/configuration.md)).
